Someone asked recently why I started Cool Cleveland more than 11 years ago. Back then, Cirque du Soleil was performing in CLE and some of their visiting artists were complaining that there didn’t seem to be much going on around here. I hand-picked a few choice goings-on, and sent them an email. We’re doing the same thing today. Still advocating for all the cool stuff and people making things happen around here. Plus, by posting to social media and making everything available on your mobile, we’re also advocating for everyone else in the region who’s looking to connect with our inherent coolness.

Others are advocating these days as well. Bike Cleveland is advocating for anyone who thinks our region’s future is more than just another highway spur or interchange. Similarly, you can join a discussion on pedestrian/cyclist safety. Our CareerTOOLBOX helps those looking for work, and the Beck offers more funding for parents looking for arts education for their kids. New gallery E11even 2 opens at 78th Street Studios, Deepak Sarma discusses collecting at MOCA, check Joe Lovano at Nighttown, and scope out a bunch of fun MLK events.

Mansfield remembers Amiri Baraka, and Larry Durstin tries to forget Jim Tressel. Use your mobile to suggest cool events, people or neighborhoods, and you might win a “priceless” CC t-shirt like Dorrie Keough. Hashtag #CoolCleveland, suggest something cool and be the hero. We’ve got your back. –Thomas Mulready

Amiri Baraka
He Spoke Truth to Power

As much as Martin Luther King, Jr. was the leader of the Civil Rights Movement, and Malcolm X the leader of the Black Power Movement, Amiri Baraka, who died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, in Newark, NJ at age 79, was the leader — the creator, the embodiment — of that tumultuous era’s Black Arts Movement…

MANSFIELD: The Summer Penny Got Pregnant What a fascinating and beautifully written story, Mansfield thank you so much for sharing it with us. In spite of the tragic ending, it paints a wonderful picture of a Cleveland neighborhood…
Marie Kittredge

Really, really loved your story. I grew up in that area during the 60’s, and it’s good to hear the colorful stories of black neighborhoods way back when. It’s seldom and rare, to read stories of (what I would say-black Cleveland)….
Sharon

ROLDO: Highway Robbery I’d think, as a practical matter, that it’d be fairly easy to run the “vote No” campaign… even without a lot of money….
John J. Polk

Pretty stupid, I’d say. Similar BS has been going on since the 80’s.Face it, politicians don’t like to give up their gravy trains once they vote for them….
James Westover

Thanks Roldo… as always, thank you for what you do…
Carlton Jackson

What about the downtown parking tax increase that City Council passed in summer 1996 to help finance the NFL stadium? Is that still in effect forever?…
Paine Pill

The parking tax of 8 percent was passed in 1995 to raise $7.1 million a year for 29 years. It was expected to raise at that time $205 million….
