Prepare

11.17-11.24.21

Prepare now for our future.

One reason to think about going Vegan this Thanksgiving is to help stave off the environmental crisis. Two other good reasons, of course, are your family’s health and the welfare of animals. If asked, most would agree with all of those, and you may have your own thinking. If you need a little encouragement (it’s not as hard as you might think), you’ll find inspiration with the video below, our new collaboration with three friends who call themselves Veganish: Ashley Smith, Michelle Jefferson and Tinishia Moore.Ashley discovered she was Mansfield Frazier’s daughter a mere two years before his untimely passing last month. We lost a writer, the community lost a leader, but Ashley lost a father she was just beginning to know. As part of CoolCleveland’s efforts towards a healthy, sustainable future, we look forward to presenting future Veganish videos and insights.

As Justin Bibb prepares to take office as Mayor of Cleveland in January, CoolCleveland columnist C. Ellen Connally points out that a major task will be to fill positions created by the overwhelming passage of Issue 24 to ensure police accountability. We revisit some of Mansfield Frazier’s columns written over the past decade, analyzing what other cities are doing, and proposing solutions for addressing violence across our region.

More insights can be found in the new book that Drink Local. Drink Tap. has just published for teens to make a difference for the environment. Get ready for the future as the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra performs at Severance and the Akron Art Museum After Dark highlights local teens. See below for local cycling, nature, photography, literature, music, theatre and a roundup of ShopLOCAL shortcuts to keep our local economy sustainable. There’s no time like the future.

Sonic & Iconic Show Focuses on Local Favorites

Last year, Cleveland concert photographers Joe Kleon and Anastasia Pantsios set up an online gallery called Sonic & Iconic, but inviting people to come see (and purchase) their photos in person still wasn’t safe. This year, they’re celebrating Sonic & Ionic: Midwest Magic at the Beachland Ballroom, one day only on Saturday November 27 @ noon-6pm. They’ll have their largest selection of their images ever with a heavy focus on artists who broke out of Cleveland or played Cleveland-style blue-collar rock.  COMMENTARY
Issue 24: The Devil Is in the Details

Mayor-Elect Justin Bibb has a lot on his plate between now and January when he takes office. Added to the traditional task of appointing cabinet members and staff,  Bibb must also fill the positions created by the newly enacted charter amendment — Issue 24, designed to ensure police accountability.Framers and supporters of Issue 24 were enthusiastic in support of their cause. It is now time for them to work with the entire community to fill these positions with able persons with the necessary and diverse backgrounds who are willing to commit the time and effort to make the reform process a success. Read More

 REVISITED
Addressing Violence

Cleveland isn’t unique in seeing a surge of violence in the past two years, which many have suggested was driven by pandemic disruptions. But sadly Cleveland has been one of the leaders — even the Mayor’s own family has been impacted. This wasn’t a new issue for Mansfield Frazier. For years, he had been looking at what other cities were doing and proposing solutions. These columns, written over a decade, from 2011 to early this year, are well worth revisiting. Read More
