Spain has a tradition of great classical guitarists, including the great master of modern classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987). Many of the following generations were inspired by him or even studied with him. In any case, it’s in the country’s air.
Up-and-coming guitarist Andrea González Caballero, who hasn’t yet reached her 30th birthday, is one of the latest to come out of the country. She’s already won major competitions and earned a graduate performance diploma from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. And she’s launched herself on the international festival circuit.
Not only does she perform pieces from the established repertoire of classical guitar music but she has premiered contemporary pieces as well. When she performs at Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights for her Cleveland Classical Guitar Society debut, she’ll focus her program on works by Spanish composers: since the instrument is so deeply embedded in Spanish culture, the number of the country’s composers who wrote music for it is large, providing a rich repertoire.
Tickets are $22, $18 for 62 and over, $10 for students. Get them here.
