Cleveland chamber ensemble BlueWater Orchestra presents a matinee program that’s somewhat different for it, offering a potpourri of short pieces intended to be family-friendly. It’s titled Exploration CLE.
“From our fantastic museums, natural beauty, industrial past, and jazz an rock n’ roll heritage, we share great music that provides the soundtrack to Cleveland’s story,” their description says.
The pieces are inspired by various Cleveland landmarks. The Cleveland Museum of Art is honored by “La Primavera,” from Ottorino Respighi’s Trittico Botticelliano, suite inspired by three Botticelli paintings. Claude Debussy’s “En Bateau” (“by boat”) from Petite Suite evokes Lake Erie, while Jennifer Higdon’s “Machina Rockus” references heavy industry.
The Cleveland Metroparks are honored with “Intermezzo” from Felix Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Music from Mozart’s Piano Concerto N. 19, with Elizabeth DeMio as soloist, pays tribute to the Cleveland Marathon; Harold Arlen’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” with one of Cleveland’s brightest young jazz piano stars, Theron Brown (pictured), is a nod to the area’s vibrant jazz scene; and rock & roll closes things out with Michael Daugherty’s “Flamingo.”
Tickets are $10.
