The life of a musician — and how music is presented to the public — has changed dramatically over the years. What it was like to perform music as a profession 125 years ago would be unrecognizable to today’s musicians.
Yet Local 4 — the Cleveland wing — of the musicians union (The American Federal of Musicians) soldiers on, representing members of the Cleveland Orchestra, the freelance musicians that populate groups such as the Cleveland POPS Orchestra, BlueWater Chamber Orchestra and pit orchestras at Playhouse Square, rocker Joe Walsh, and jazz musicians such as Ernie Krivda. Polka king Frankie Yankovic was a member.
Local 4 is celebrating its 125th anniversary with a concert at the Beachland Ballroom, featuring some well-known local rock & folk artists, who are among the best and most talented area artists. The Sunday Classic, with singer/songwriter/guitarists Brent Kirby and Ray Flanagan, both of whom front their own rock bands as well as play with a host of other area musicians, opens at 7pm; veteran singer/songwriter Alex Bevan and Friends perform at 8pm; and Kent’s legendary Numbers Band, now in their 51st year, bring their distinctive blues/jazz/rock sound to the stage at 9pm.
The event will be both live streamed and in-person. There’s limited seating for the in-person event and reservations are required (it’s free though). Call 216-881-1802 or go to local-4-afm-125th-anniversary-concert-tickets for more information and reservations.
