Akron is a great symbol of how to bounce back. This week, they’ve announced Live at the Locks, a festival-style concert series right downtown in the thick of it. An Akron band is reuniting, and festivals are bouncing back all around the region, like Tremont’s Greek Festival, summer concerts are bumping at Wade Oval Wednesdays and the Metroparks’ many stages. There’s a Memorial Day vinyl party and a plant sale at the Clark-Fulton Greenhouse, and you can catch a documentary on street safety for bikes.

We’re personally involved in a few exciting projects this week. Join us at the Music Box for The Power of Words, organized by Regina Brett & Derdriu Ring to raise money for CPL. Some 30 writers, artists and well-known figures have three minutes on the stage. Hint: I’m gonna sing about a one-night stand with a poet. Then we’re up to the Akron Civic Theatre Knight Stage on Sat 5/23 for the encore performance of The Birth of Punk in NEO with 5 seminal and up-and-coming bands from the region celebrating our region’s claim on forging the prototype of what became punk. Come on over.

The Birth of Punk in NEO
INVADES AKRON

Last week’s premiere of The Birth of Punk in NEO at the Beachland was a rousing success, with many insisting they are planning to catch the follow up this Sat 5/23 at the Akron Civic Theatre Knight Stage, which is nearing a sellout. Five current area bands will rock the stage to celebrate Rocket From the Tombs, Pere Ubu, Dead Boys, Numbers Band, Waitresses, DEVO, Chrissie Hynde, Unit 5, Bizarros, Pagans and the other misfits and outcasts who forged punk’s prototype in Northeast Ohio.

Come to the Rubber City to hear Bizarros, The Robert Conn Band, Patty No!, Vanity Crash/Queue Up and Massive Hotdog Recall as they give honor to their predecessors and play some of their fresh material. In between acts, get schooled on our region’s proud history with short video documentaries. Not to scare you, but you might learn something while having the time of your life in the mosh pit.  FESTIVE EVENTS WELCOME SUMMER

If crowds and lots of activity are your favored setting for Memorial Day weekend, you have several big options. Music and irie vibes? There’s the annual Reggae Fest at Voinovich Park with local and national acts representing the gamut of reggae influenced music, plus Jamaican food and handmade vendors.

Or try a different culture: Aegean. The four-day Tremont Greek Festival at Annunciation Church is in its 54th year of dishing up Greek-style food, drink, music and dancing. And out at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds you can smell the smoke as the annual Berea Rib Cook-Out and Beer Festival serves up traditional eats and cover bands for the 27th year.

AKRON BAND REUNITES TO RELEASE NEW MUSIC

Akron band Farline wrote a bunch of songs in the early 1990s, and then took a long hiatus—very long. It wasn’t until last year that guitarist/keyboard player/songwriter Mike Wright stumbled on the old songs, and brought the band back together to reimagine and  update them and get to work on new material, the first of which is available now.
