Come Along

10.08-15.25

 It’s Go Time

In a week that saw the venerable and influential WCSB college radio get yanked off the air unceremoniously and replaced by yet another jazz station run by ideastream (read our story), you may need suggestions for cultural offerings you can count on.

CoolCleveland travel writer Claudia Taller takes us on a stroll down Euclid Avenue, MOMIX goes multimedia, the CBG hosts a Herb Society Fair, Better World Day makes tech better, Doubting Thomas remembers Pat’s in the Flats, the DEVOtional honors our Spudboys, and Craig Matis’ Dulcimer Diaries tells a musical story of abolitionist John Brown’s slave rebellion at Dunham Tavern.

Start making your signs now for the No Kings protest next week. It’s time to stand up.

 CLEVELAND ARTS PRIZE
 2025 WINNERS HONORED

The Cleveland Arts Prize celebrates outstanding creative work and cultural leadership in Northeast Ohio. Established in 1960 by the Women’s City Club, it is the nation’s oldest municipal arts prize. It gives out Discipline Prizes (for artists at different career stages), Special Prizes (for service, advocacy, and leadership), Verge Fellowships for early-career artists, and scholarships for students.

For 2025, the winners were announced in August and the 65th Annual Awards Event will be held on Wed 10/22 at 6:30 PM at the Simon and Rose Mandel Theatre, Tri-C Eastern Campus. The evening will include performances, tributes, the official presentation and an After Party featuring DJ Red-I (pictured). ClevelandArtsPrize.org.

 WCSB YANKED OFF AIR

In a sudden move that has Cleveland’s music community in an uproar, Cleveland State’s long-running and beloved college radio station, WCSB FM 89.3 was taken over by NEOJazz, an all-jazz format run by public radio’s ideastream. The current staff was evicted without notice on Friday October 3.

College radio has long been a lynchpin of the area’s vibrant music scene and WCSB was one of the area’s most eclectic broadcast outlets, creating communities around diverse genres of music, all of which have lost their home base.

WALK THRU HISTORY ON EUCLID AVENUE

I met Francis Payne Bolton in the Arcade on Euclid Avenue the other day. The daughter of the Binghams of Euclid Avenue, she married Chester Castle Bolton in 1907, seventeen years after the Arcade, then known as the “Crystal Palace,” was built. She started talking like a politician right away, explaining that she was the first Ohio woman elected to the U.S. Congress. Oh, she was quite chatty.

The actor was part of the Take A Hike Euclid Avenue historic tour. When Mrs. Bolton was alive, the Arcade was a busy shopping and dining complex, the first indoor shopping center in the United States. It opened in May 1890 and is the city’s first building listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
