In 2011, three childhood buddies opened Rid-All Farm in the heart of the Kinsman “Forgotten Triangle” neighborhood (now less “forgotten with the Opportunity Corridor running through it). That farm has grown and flourished, adding many amenities, including this year a “pick your own farmers’ market.
In 2019, it added a festival called FreshFest, a free event featuring vendors, food, entertainment, kids’ activities, chef tastings and workshops on the sprawling property. It includes everything from yoga classes overlooking its rain basin, to chess under the trees to a basketball tournament on its permanent court to a farmers market. While the festival took a break in 2020 (like most did), it returned in 2021 and, like the farm, has grown each year in size and scope, adding things such as a geodesic dome containing a meditation space.
It also includes a full day of music on a main stage, with performances by local artists leading up to a headliner: a legacy rapper from the 80s and 90s, appealing to the older crowd. In the past it’s had MC Lyte, KRS-One and Biz-Markie. This year, it’s Rakim, from the duo Eric B. and Rakim (1986-1993).
But wait! This year, it’s got TWO national headliners. Joining Rakin will be the Rebirth Brass Band who have been bringing the classic New Orleans brass band sound on the road for nearly 40 years, and are a major force behind its worldwide popularity.
Other performers include Eliy Orcko, Retro Pharoah, Mynameisbravo, Elijah, DJ Cooley High, and Sierra Delaine.
