Northeast Ohio rock quintet Rent for Cheryl has come out of obscurity relatively quickly. Just a couple of years ago, their name didn’t appear on festival or summer concert series rosters, but this year they’ve emerged after about five years of preparation.
The seeds of the band were planted when vocalist Isabelle Post and guitarist Joe Ibrahim, former high school classmates, came together and began writing songs, eventually forming the lineup they have today with guitarist Kyle Cook, bassist Miguel Train Torres and drummer Ronnie Copfer and playing some lower profile gigs around the area. But starting with their album Past Midnight released last year, they began their upwards trajectory. This year, they played Cleveland’s Brite Winter festival in February, crossed the ocean for some gigs in Scotland, England and France, and last month, played the Highland Square PorchROKR which featured nearby 200 bands on multiple stages before concluding with a single headliner on one stage: Rent for Cheryl.
This week you can check out the group which describes their music as “indie-alt, pop, blues, jazz, rock,” at Cain Park’s Evans Amphitheater. They’ll do a “Stage on Stage” theater where the audience sits onstage with the band. The show is free. Go HERE for more information.
