Since the Cuyahoga River has gotten clean enough to become a recreational asset, it’s common to see canoes, kayaks and paddleboards taking to the water. Another type of water sport that’s become popular in Cleveland is dragon boat racing. The colorful boats, sporting dazzling carved dragon figureheads, are powered by a team of 20 and include a drummer whose percussion urges on the rowers. While dragon boating is a Chinese tradition dating back thousands of years, it enjoyed a modern resurgence and now you’ll see people of all backgrounds, skill levels and ages taking part, enjoying a sport that involves teamwork and offers the chance to be outdoors and get some exercise in a social setting.
The Cleveland Dragon Boat Festival started out on the Cuyahoga in the Flats, before moving out to Lorain’s Black River for several years. It returned to the Flats in 2024, making it easier for observers to come down to Merwin’s Wharf in the Flats and watch as the rowers take to the water or station themselves along the West Bank boardwalk and watch as they sail by. Teams have been working since spring for the big day this weekend: the 18th annual Cleveland Dragon Boat Association racing festival.
Even if you’re not a racer or don’t know anyone who is, come on down with family and friends. Enjoy some food and drink and the distinctive site of the long, colorful boats on the water.
