The genre of “goth cabaret” goes back more than 20 years to Amanda Palmer and the Dresden Dolls. They were followed by other acts that played off-the-wall mixtures of music usually in extravagant vintage costume, including Rasputina and Charming Disaster.
The Dust Bowl Faeries, now in their 12th year of performing, follow in that mold. They refer to their sound as a medley of perform a “dark cabaret and gothic polka music, infused with a dose of witchcraft and a dusting of woodland magic.” With accordion, singing saw, lap steel, electric bass, percussion and acoustic guitar, the group, hailing from New York’s Hudson Valley, draw on murder ballads, Eastern European folk music and circus music, among other things.
They’ll be performing at the same venue that brought you Charming Disaster: Cleveland Heights’ Wizbang Theater, which presents many strange and eclectic acts. Opening for them is Cleveland’s theatrical Americana-soul band Cowboy Princess Brigade. Go here for tickets.
