Photo Cleveland’s Films in Focus series presents free screenings of influential classic films, usually ones with an offbeat, surreal narrative and/or atmosphere. They take place at the Tower Press Building in the campus district, which means of course Cleveland’s premiere underground filmmaker Robert Banks is involved: he has a studio there and has long hosted film screenings at the building. This month, it will screen the film that announced David Lynch’s unique vision to a wider audience: the 1977 black & white, surrealistic horror film. It was Lynch’s first full length feature film, which he produced, directed, wrote and edited, so his vision reached the audience in its purest state: a now-instantly recognizable vision. It’s virtually impossible to describe what the film is “about,” so if you don’t know it, you’ll have to just go see it (We suspect many at this screening will already be fans).
Door are at 8; screening starts at sunset, around 9-9:15pm. There will be a short pre-film talk and some videos about the film at around 8:45. They’re asking people to arrive before 9 in order not to distract from the film. You’re welcome to bring food and drinks, as well as chairs and blankets. There’s free parking off East 21st behind the building. It’s an 18+ event.
