Fri 6/12 @ 5-10PM
Near West Theatre celebrates diversity of every type in all its programs all year long, providing a home for people of all ages who might feel they don’t fit anywhere else and bringing people — especially young people — together to get to know each others and to work toward common goals. So it’s appropriate that it’s hosting its own Juneteenth event this weekend on the outdoor Near West Theatre Plaza in front of its Gordon Square Building to honor the day in 1865 when the last slaves learned about emancipation.
The event will feature an array of performances by local ensembles, including the Near West Theatre Youth performers, Blakk Jakk Dance Collective, DOC studios: Poetry & Spoken Word, Djapo Cultural Arts, and AfroFunk Revölution. The Yum Food Truck will be onsite and there will be information tables with resources from community groups, and Juneteenth-themed crafts.
It’s free and all ages are welcome!
