Musical Play and Art Show Explore the Legacy of Abolitionist John Brown

Thu 4/30 @ 7PM

Craig Matis, who established a reputation for his multimedia shows with his band Uzizi back in the 80s, has never stopped being creative.

In collaboration with Treva Offutt, he’s completed a full-length musical and radio play called John Brown: The Dulcimer Diaries about early 19th-century abolitionist John Brown who was executed in 1859 for inciting a slave rebellion.

He’ll be presenting musical selections from the play with nine singers and a small band, paying tribute to the abolitionists who created a climate that led to the end of slavery in the 1860s. It takes place at the Sixty6 at the Midtown Collaboration Center. Come early because starting at 5pm in the building’s upper floor you can see a display of Matis’s illustrations from the project, described as “a visual installation exploring the legacy of slavery, political division, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.”

The event is free. Get more information here.
