It’s spring, the snow is totally gone, the trees are leafing out — and there’s litter everywhere. Ugh. So it’s also the season for trash cleanups!
Since 1990, enemies of trashed have been gathering for a marathon trash cleanup called RiverSweep, focusing on removing trash from the Cuyahoga River Corridor to help keep the river clean.
Started in 1990, RiverSweep is a one-day litter cleanup that focuses on protecting the Cuyahoga River by removing garbage from the Cuyahoga River Corridor. In that time volunteers have removed 25,248 discarded tires (why does it feel like there are always more though?) and nearly 1.55 million pounds of trash. That’s led to 400 acres of new greenspace cleaned and conserved, along with 14 miles of new trails, among them Hart Crane Park, Scranton Flats, Treadway Ravine and Steelyard Commons Towpath Trail Stage 2, among others.
You can choose the cleanup site of your preference by registering here. (Registration is required). Volunteers with get gloves and trash bags and while supplies last, a RiverSweep T-shirt.
