Honestly, we have no idea what to expect either but Summit Metro Parks is inviting people to come by their F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm Visitors Center for a “Salamander Slime Open House.” Now, we’ve JUST learned today that the spotted salamander is Ohio’s official amphibian, and apparently they live in these parts, breeding in so-called “vernal pools” during spring rains. And they secrete a sticky slime that tastes terrible to predators.
This event won’t ask you to taste salamander slime; in fact, you won’t have to come in contact with it at all. Instead, visitors will be making play slime while a naturalist fills you in about the lives and habits of salamanders and shares where you might catch sight of them in vernal pools in the next month or so. It’s free and all ages are welcome. For more information, call 330-865-8065.
