Fri 1/2 @ 8PM
In the late 90s and early 2000s, there was a group of bands who migrated from Kent State University to Lakewood who called themselves the Davenport Collective. There they established a recording studio run by Mike Cormier from The Volta Sound and Ben Gemtro who led The Dreadful Yawns. Musicians in the group flowed from band to band, populating groups such as the It Men, Village Bicycle, Extra Medium Pony, Afternoon Naps and New Planet Trampoline. Many of the musicians are still playing in local bands today.
While Gmetro has played with other bands, The Dreadful Yawns has been his main project and outlets for his own songs, with various musicians backing him up. The band released on highly praised album in 2007 called Rest on Cleveland-based Exit Stencil records. It was inspired by the early days of country rock when young L.A. musicians overlaid a veneer of psychedelia on a downhome sound.
Gmetro and company are resurfacing this weekend at the Beachland Tavern with the folkie Plastic Wildflowers and low-fi, offhanded-sounding Napsack also on the bill. Go here for tickets.
