The Cleveland Silent Film Festival & Colloquium (CSFF) is presenting a feast of silent films at the Cleveland museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium, with a closing screening taking place at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque in Saturday September 27.
Lady Windermere’s Fan, screening Friday September 19, is based on the 1892 comedy by Oscar Wilde, familiar to every community theater. The film, celebrating its centennial this year, was directed by German-American Ernst Lubitsch who became known for his sophisticated comedies of manners, with a cast mostly unknown to modern film buffs with the exceptional of Ronald Coleman.The film screening feature music by a live quintet from Cleveland Photoplayers, directed by Rodney Sauer.
On Saturday afternoon September 20, a double bill of René Clair comedies, Paris Qui Dort (1925) and Entr’acte(1924), will screen at 3pm, with live music by Philip Carli and Eric Charnofsky based on French music from the 1920s. They mark 100 years of the Art Deco movement, currently showcases in CMA’s Rose Iron Works and Art Deco exhibit. Prior to the screening at 1:30, pianist Charnofsky will moderate a panel on silent film music.
Buster Keaton’s 1925 comedy Go West will screen on Sunday September 21, again with a live chamber score by Rodney Sauer, and enhanced sound effects by Radio on the Lake Theatre. Go here for tickets to the films screening at CMA.
The series will close with the screening of the 1926 German version of Faust, directed by F.W. Murnau, at the CIA Cinematheque, accompanied by an original score by Los Angeles-based film scoring project the Silent Light, which creates original heavy metal soundtracks for silent films.
