Geauga County’s no-kill shelter Rescue Village is known for the work it does in rescuing and adopting out not only cats and dogs, but also farm animals such as pigs, goats and horses. Its beautiful shelter on Chillicothe Road in Novelty has sunny social rooms for cats, dog walking trails in the woods and barns for bigger animals. It’s a place of joy. Full disclosure: I once adopted a cat from there I totally wasn’t intending to get I had 15 great years with her.
One of its biggest annual events is Woofstock, which it bills as the largest and longest running dog festival in the region” — and it helps cats too, although the events taking place at the Cleveland Metroparks Polo Field are designed for your dog, not your cat, who’d probably rather stay home and sleep anyway. “Dock diving” doesn’t sound like something they’d enjoy
But many dogs will, and others will love activities such as the lure courses, the fast dash and more. There are also special activities for kids, a raffle tent, live music, vendors, food trucks, a beer garden and yes, a “Rescue Row” where you too can sign up to adopt an animal you totally weren’t intending to get. There are also a couple of blessings of the animals at 10am and 12:30pm, a costume contest and, at noon, a showcase of adoptable dogs on the main stage because they really want to tug at your heartstrings. Adopt, adopt, adopt!
