CUSP Opens Its Season of Improvisational Music With Experimental Duo and Local Solo Artist

Sat 9/13 @ 8PM

The Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project aka CUSP has a mission to present cutting-edge musicians, most of whom use improvisation in their work and many of whom blend genres and disciplines in their presentations.

Their season starts this week with a performance by the duo of vocalist Alex Koi and cellist/multi-instrumentalist Kirin McElwain, who, like many musicians in this area of music combine acoustic and electronic sounds, and use composed music as a springboard for improvisation. We’re told that “Through polyphonic narrative, ecstatic release, and coy murmurs, [Koi] bends between her diverse musical influences in the avant-garde, opera, jazz, and electronic music, while McElwain “uses cello, modular synthesizer, and voice to explore the tension between formal structure and chaos, western classical harmony and noise, and ideas of ‘goodness’ and ‘correctness’.”

The two women are currently working on a full-length release called Wake, scheduled for release next year, something they’ll undoubtedly preview at the show at Convivium 33.

The show will also feature Cleveland-based writer/musician Marzi Margo who performs as a solo artist under the name Let’s Fight!

Admission is a $15 suggested donation but they always emphasize that no one is turned away because they can’t pay — they are eager to turn people on to this musical tributary.
