Teen Ska-Punk Band Sabon Celebrates Debut Album at Grog Shop

Sat 8/16 @ 9:30PM

I’ve never heard Cleveland quartet Sabon, not yet anyway, but they seem like a lot of fun. The three woman and one guy play ska-punk — yes, that genre, which was the rage of the 90s, still has a beach head in the music scene, probably because it’s high-energy and relentlessly entertaining.  Guitarist Sylvia, bassist/vocalist Ava, lead vocalist/sax player Sophia and drummer Caleb claim inspiration from bands such as Less Than Jake, one of the ska-punk biggies of the ’90s; Chicago punk rockers Rise Against; and California hardcore/metal mashup Strung Out.

Sabon is now releasing their debut album They Call Me, with what they describe as “14 ripping tracks that’ll take you back to the early 90s roots of ska-punk.” (Not sure how they’d know; they’re still in high school so they weren’t born yet.) They’ll play the album in its entirety at their record release show at the Grog Shop, where Quick Mystery will open. (Yes, the show has a late start — there’s an earlier show.)
