Authors of Book on How Abortion Politics Impacts Marginalized People Speak at Mac's Backs

Thu 8/7 @ 7PM

Preterm Cleveland and Mac’s Backs on Coventry are hosting a book discussion and signing with the authors of Liberating Abortion, Renee B. Sherman and Regina Mahone, taking place at Mac’s Back.

Why should you attend

If you care about reproductive rights and reproductive justice. If you care about people being denied their rights. If you’ve just finished a book about abortion that doesn’t reflect your experience. Then this book and this discussion is for YOU. This necessary book eloquently answers that  “…we have to…stop settling for good enough. We need to end the struggle altogether and build toward abortion liberation.”  (Liberating Abortion, Introduction, page 2)

Who gets an abortion?

Everyone and anyone. The authors focus on people of color, young people, trans people, the differently abled, LGBTQ+ folks, Medicaid recipients — all those people whose stories have been ignored, erased, relegated to footnotes, overlooked by the reproductive historians, left out of mainstream political discussions of abortion.

This all-inclusive book is a reference manual for everyone: the person new to political action, the person who had to struggle every step of the way to get a needed abortion, the politician deciding to make real change, the longtime activist.

The authors wrote Liberating Abortion to share this vital information: moving abortion experiences told by real people — stories of black repro justice activists —  and why sharing stories is so vital and necessary; the true definitions of the most common abortion procedures; how denial of reproductive justice has caused irreparable damage; the race and class issues of abortion accessibility; how “abortionsplaining” has caused the spread of lies and contributed to the passing of countless abortion bans; why realistic and honest sex education must be taught in all schools — all the truths that mainstream abortion politicians and literature activism do not speak.

Read the introduction and Chapter 13, “Liberating Abortion.” Then read the rest of the book. Then read those two sections again. I weep when I read those pages — for the truths that were never told, for the poignancy of the exclusions and pain, for the detailed analysis of the abortion stigma and how hurtful it is to everyone.

Liberating Abortion opens my eyes and gives me HOPE! This book will serve as a tool for conversations and education; as an action plan to end abortion stigma; as an inspiration and with guidelines for community activism.

Liberating Abortion is s powerful book gives us the weapons we need to fight and to win our reproductive rights, our reproductive justice and our freedom.
