If you’re into Celtic culture, then the place you want to be this weekend is the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds in Berea. That’s where the 48th annual Ohio Scottish Games & Celtic Festival which will take place. Start with the Calling of the Clans on Friday evening at 9:45 and end with the Twilight Tattoo on Saturday at 6pm, and in between there’s dozens of things to watch and learn and do.
There are all kinds of music and dance performances, with bagpipe bands, Irish dance schools, highland dancers and Irish folk bands. There are also athletic competitions based on ancient games such as axe and hammer throwing. There are all kinds of exhibits, competitions and demonstrations, including falconry, British cars and motorcycles, Irish and Scottish dog breeders, jousting exhibitions, haggis throwing and border collies doing what they do best: herding.
There are workshops you can take part in to learn highland dancing yourself and to explore your genealogy There is of course whiskey tasting, as well as a “wee ones’ area” for those way too young to be partaking of whiskey. New this year in the kids’ area is the Great Lakes National Puppet Theater so maybe that will distract them from demanding their own set of bagpipes.
