Each year, Baldwin Wallace University’s acclaimed music theatre program graduates another class of top-notch performers who go onto careers onstage, in TV and in movies. Kyle Jean-Baptiste, a member of the class of 2015, went directly from Berea to Broadway, becoming the youngest, and first Black, actor to play to Jean Valjean in Les Misérableson Broadway that summer. He was getting ready to move onto the Broadway production of The Color Purple in September 2015 when he accidentally fell from a New York fire escape on August 29 and died at the age of 21, cutting short what was likely to have been a brilliant acting career.

In 2017, the BW Music Theatre Department held its first Kyle Jean-Baptiste benefit concert. This year more than 30 performers, both current students and alumni of the BW music theatre program, will perform at Market Garden Brewery to benefit the scholarship fund set up in his memory at BW.
