No Exit New Music is calling this season their “Season of Surreality.” In keeping with that theme their second concert of the series is called “The Unconscious,” a reference to one of the main drivers of the surrealist movement.
These shows differ a bit from a typical No Exit show, which usually includes a series of avant-garde musical selections including some premieres. These shows will offer audiences three original films: a silent film by Tim Beyer and two films by filmmaker/composers James Praznik, and Luke Haaksma with world premiere live music. They’ll also include a multimedia collaboration between guest musicians Zeitgeist from St. Paul, Minnesota, and Philip Blackburn, with “surrealist” instruments created just for these concerts. And at SPACES only, they will perform in a Surrealist Dreamscape — a 3-D installation and concert environment — created by artists Leila Khoury and Kristen Newell.
They’ll present the show three times: at Cleveland State University Thursday, at Waterloo Arts on Friday and at SPACES Gallery on Saturday.
As with all No Exit shows it’s free and open to everyone; no tickets are required. Get more information here.
