The Cleveland-based Contemporary Youth Orchestra gives top-flight high school age musicians the opportunity to work with contemporary composers a well as collaborate with pop & rock acts such as Graham Nash, Pat Benatar, Kenny Loggins and Ben Folds.
For their upcoming concert, Compassion Over Everything, taking place a the Tri-C Metro campus auditorium, 90 young musicians will join with eight professional soloists to perform two pieces.
One of them, Grammy-winning composer Vincent Mendoza’s Concerto for Orchestra, with its themes of social justice and elements of jazz and spoken word, has never been performed in this country. Sax player Chris Coles, drummer Joe Tomino, trumpet player Etienne Massicotte, vocalist Josiah Quarles and guitarist Dan Bruce join the ensemble as soloists.
Thirty-six-year-old jazz pianist/composer/producer Pascal Le Boeuf’s “Triple Concerto” for violin, percussion duo and orchestra, which was co-commissioned by CYO, will be premiered at the concert. Violinist Barbora Kolářová and percussionists Garrett Arney and Ben Kipp will be the soloists.
