Movies at Home Looks at 1944 Rita Hayworth/Gene Kelly Dance-a-thon

Thu 11/3 @ 7PM

Due to technical difficulties on the original date, this program was rescheduled for Thursday December 1.

The 1944 romantic music film Cover Girl isn’t long on plot, but it’s long on appealing stars and great music, which makes it a perfect topic for The Musical Theater Project’s Monthly Movies at Home discussion. Rita Hayworth, in her mid 20s and at the beginning of her career, and the energetic Gene Kelly, just a few years old, are the romantic couple. And it’s in Technicolor!

Hayworth is a chorus girl in Kelly’s nightclub who becomes a Broadway star. They have one of those fake arguments that temporarily separate meant-to-be-couples; she’s about to marry her producer when she leaves him at the altar to go back to Kelly whom she’s loved all along … Oh come on, it’s an old musical. This isn’t a spoiler.

And while many may think of Kelly as a dancer, the film was actually intended as a showcase for Hayworth, who trained first as a dancer whose parents were both dancers and began training her at a young age. On top of two terrific dancers, the film also featured tunes by lyricist Ira Gershwin and composer Jerome Kern. Unlike her dancing, Hayworth’s singing was dubbed.

To join TMTP’s discussion, first watch artistic director Bill Rudman’s intro on YouTube, then watch the film via Crackle (free), Vudu, Apple TV, Google Play or YouTube (buy or rent).

Then join Bill on Zoom Thursday November 3 for a sure-to-be-lively discussion. It’s free and open to all, and no registration is needed.
