Apollo’s Fire Celebrates Music From Merry Old England

Thu 11/21 @ 7:30PM

Fri 11/22 @ 8PM

Sat 11/23 @ 8PM

Sun 11/24 @ 4PM

You’d better act quickly if you want to attend Apollo’s Fire’s “Scarborough Fayre: Music from Merry Old England,” one of its popular traditional folk-based programs. The ensemble led by Jeannette Sorrell offers an earthier and more informal take on music, exploring less rarified music that both peasants and royalty enjoyed on a regular basis. It demonstrates how popular tunes — from mournful ballads to raucous drinking songs — fueled the music of British composers such as John Dowland and Henry Purcell.

Music makers, in addition to Sorrell at the harpsichord, include soprano Amanda Powell, Brian Kay and Peter Walker on plucked instruments and vocals, Susan Perry Gilmore and Alan Choo on violins, Kathie Stewart on wooden flutes, Tina Bergmann on hammered dulcimer, and Parer Ramsay on renaissance and Celtic harps.

They’ll perform Thu 11/21 at First United Methodist in Akron, Fri 11/22 at St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights, Sat 11/23 at the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Kulas Hall, and Sun 11/24 at Rocky River Presbyterian Church. Saturday’s program is followed by an Afterglow party with mini-tarts, cider and lute music, free to concertgoers.

Tickets are $10-$72.
