Get the Look:  Summer Weddings

You sent the RSVP on time, picked up the perfect gift for the newlyweds and now — the big question — what will I wear?

With weddings ranging widely in formality and theme, deciding what to wear to a wedding can be complicated and nerve-racking. It can be hard to strike a balance between looking your best while trying not to take any of the spotlight away from the bride and groom. Luckily, there are lots of options that men and women can choose that can fit various wedding styles and preferences.

Before you dive into your closet, or local boutique, here are some quick do’s and don’ts, as well as myth busters for wedding attire:

*Don’t ever wear white to a wedding under any circumstances.

*Wearing black to weddings is no longer taboo and it’s acceptable to wear it for evening affairs.

*It’s better to be overdressed than underdressed so err on the side of caution.

*You don’t have to spend a lot of money to look nice for a wedding so feel free to borrow wedding guest attire or rent from sites if it helps you stick to the dress code.

Still need a few suggestions?  Here’s a few wedding outfit ideas for men and women if you’re stuck:

Yes to the dress (or jumpsuit or skirt):

Floral Maxi Dress

A floral maxi dress is always a great option that’s perfectly fitting for a wedding. Floral maxi dresses offer different silhouettes and embellishments that can make them appear more formal and tailored. They also can come in many different styles, including V-neck, off the shoulder, or even halter.

Jumpsuit

If you don’t want to wear a dress, you can opt for a full-length jumpsuit. Jumpsuits can be a great option for something that’s formal and fun, giving you the flexibility to move on the dance floor. A jumpsuit can also be super flattering on your figure. Pair a simple one with statement shoes and a purse for a look that’s chic and comfortable.

Blouse with Midi Skirt

If you’re looking for a more eclectic alternative to a dress, you can wear a blouse with a matching midi (calf-length) skirt. For this option, go for a material like silk to make the outfit more formal and wedding-friendly. This is one that’ll definitely stand out at the event.

Best (Dressed) Man:

Suit and Tie

When in doubt, a suit is the best option for a clean, sophisticated look.  Available in an array of colors and fabrics, the possibilities are endless.  A modern take?  Try wearing a slim-cut charcoal suit. You can personalize your look with a printed necktie or bow tie and printed socks. This suit is certainly a classic and timeless for any type of wedding. Just make sure that the suit is perfectly fitted.

Black Tux with Matching Trousers

For more formal weddings, a black tux with matching trousers is a great option for men. Pair it with a black necktie and white shirt or a black bow tie and black shirt. This style is perfect for evening affairs and for those wedding invitations that say “black tie is optional.” An alternative for a black tux could also be a conservative black suit.  Not sure what is considered black tie or formal?  Check out this quick cheat sheet we found.

Remember, dressing for a wedding can be fun. Be sure to pick an outfit that’s easy to sit, dance, and eat in — this goes especially for your shoes!  Use the wording on the invitation and the time of the year to determine what will work best for you. There are so many different options to choose!  Whatever you decide, remember to add your own personal touches to fit your style.

Happy Wedding Season!
