In his long career, Cleveland jazz sax player Ernie Krivda has collaborated with so many players he’s probably forgotten half of them. In the more than 50 years that he’s been a professional musician, he’s played with some of the genre’s greatest names and been part of countless ensembles ranging from big bands to duos. And of course he’s known as the director of Tri-C’s noted jazz program, which has launched many music careers.
Yet he still exudes an obvious excitement about music and undoubtedly new collaborations keep his spirits fresh. One of his more recent is the Ernie Krivda Detroit Connection Quartet. It features fellow Clevelander, jazz/gospel/pop pianist Lafayette McCarthon, and a rhythm section from Detroit , acoustic bassist Jeff Halsey and drummer Rennell Gonsalves, playing a repertoire of mainstream be-bop classics. The group came together for a performance at Tri-C Jazz festival a few years back; now they’re returning to play at Nighttown. Tickets are $20.
