* Developer Tony Troppe Plans New Boutique Hotel in Akron’s Historic Arts District

Akron-based developer Tony Troppe has helped transform a corner of downtown Akron into what’s been dubbed the Historic Arts District — the blocks surrounding the Akron Art Museum. He’s restored several classic old buildings and opened a pair of music venues: the rock/pop-oriented Musica and sleek jazz nightclub BluJazz Akron, which opened in the fall of 2014.

Now he’s launching his biggest project yet, and true to form, it’s another repurposing. He’s planning to open a 65-room boutique hotel in the United Building at the corner of Market and Main streets, which he and his partners renovated for office space after he bought it in 1998.

He’s calling the new hotel project Blutique Hotel Akron, branding it in keeping with BluJazz a block away. Also true to form, his re-do of the building will preserve much of the feel of the neo-classical revival building. He’s planning for a 2017 opening.
