Faye Hargate is rapidly acquiring a reputation as one of the area’s most exciting and adventurous theater artists. She’s been involved in most aspects of live stagings, often blurring the boundaries between roles. She’s done dramatic performance installations as well as the team-created works known as devised theater.

She’ll be performing in her one-woman show, Feefer Rising, at Cleveland Public Theatre, where she’s education manager. She created the piece over the last three years in workshops with CPT’s executive artistic director Raymond Bobgan, who directed the show. It’s the first fully staged production of the piece.

The piece explores the unfolding sexuality and sense of identy of a young woman from pre-puberty through late adolescence. Describing the show, CPT says, “Woven with American pop references and personal narrative, Feefer Rising challenges a culture that alternately shames and sexualizes young women, proposing instead a murkier, more nuanced portrait of a girl’s sexual coming-of-age.”

CPT’s new play associate Caitlin Lewins adds, “With Feefer Rising, we are looking back into points of origin. We are diving into the realm of sexual identity as it forms and takes shape.  How do we explore or repress our own longings as we seek to navigate our way into understanding, acceptance and enjoyment of our full selves? This is about fantasy and action, fear and yearning. But sex and eros can run deep with power and as the philosophers tell us, it can become the winged chariot that may lead us to ourselves and to awakening?”

Performances take place at 7pm Thursday, Friday Saturday and Monday 12/3-19 at CPT’s Parish Hall. There is no late seating, so arrive on time. The 80-minute plays has no intermission. Tickets are $12-$25.
