However cheesy it may seem in retrospect, Cleveland’s ’80s hair metal scene was a lot of fun, brimming with interesting characters and good times. One individual who stood out during that time was singer Daniel Montesanto aka Dan Montez. Performing with bands like Ginger Roxx, L’America, Montez, the Fashion Police (pictured above, with Montesanto in front) and Trip, he created a mystique with his good looks, enviable mane of thick honey-blond hair and undeniable charisma.

But as much he strutted around tossing his hair like some homegrown David Lee Roth, he was a genuinely good guy with a good heart who liked a wide range of music. The Stooges were a special favorite of his. When he attended the memorial for Stiv Bators of the Dead Boys at Babylon A Go Go in 1990, he was especially excited to meet Detroit’s Dark Carnival, which included a couple of members of the Stooges.

Sadly, in September of 1995, Montesanto was stabbed to death in an incident following a bar altercation. Now, on the 20th anniversary of his death, some of his friends are gathering to celebrate his life and have a great big jam session at Slim & Chubby’s in Strongsville. Members of Ginger Roxx, the Fashion Police and Trip, as well as another band from that era Kidd Wicked, and current ’80s pop-metal tribute band 1988, will play. It’s open to all.
