The Guinness World Record was established more than 60 years ago, allegedly to settle late-night pub arguments before they got to the stage of the combatants throwing pints in each other’s faces.
Over the years, it has provided opportunities for groups and individuals to dream up new stunts with which to claim records — the largest this, the most that — to stage events, rally groups and get publicity.
Currently, the record holder for the world’s largest free-floating soap bubble — bet you didn’t know there was one! — is Sam Heath of the UK. But now for long, if Clevelander Gary Pearlman aka Dr. U.R. Awesome is successful.
He’ll attempt to break Heath’s record, which means he’ll need to blow a bubble larger than 822.23 cubic feet. He’ll give it two tries — once outside at University Circle’s Wade Oval, and once indoors at the nearby Cleveland Botanical Garden’s Clark Hall. He says he’s already doubled the record for the indoor bubble during practice. Why so early? He says he needs the specific meteorological conditions found in the early morning to aid his bubble blowing.
What are Dr. Awesome’s credentials? He’s been entertaining people as a bubble artist, magician and balloon twister at Big Fun in Coventry Village for years. And as a tie-in, Big Fun will be sponsoring Bubble Palooza with a bubble exhibition and hands-on bubble activities for families. That takes place from 10am-12pm and it’s free.
