Valerie Salstrom’s Get Hep Swing hosts swing dances on the last Saturday of every month at the Slovenian Workman’s Home on Waterloo Road. But this month’s promises to be something really special.
As usual the evening starts with an hour-long dance lesson from 8-9pm, geared to both novices and experts and always featuring both the basics and some new steps. Don’t worry about bringing a partner either; part of the fun is rotating and getting to meet and dance with new people.
At 9pm the actual dancing starts, and this month, live music will be provided by Red Light Roxy, a sextet featuring some of the area’s best jazz musicians fronted by sultry vocalist Eileen Burns. Together they recreate the swing/jump blues/jazz/boogie woogie/R&B pop sounds of the ’40s and early ’50s. They’ll transport you back in time 65 years and make you feel like you’re dancing in some long-gone ballroom.
The Slovenian Workman’s Home has a well-stocked bar and they’ll be selling snacks as well, so you’ll have plenty of fuel. Admission is $12 and no reservations are required.
But wait! The evening’s not over when the dancing ends at midnight. Afterward, anyone who wants to go is invited over to the Grovewood Tavern a few blocks away to hang out for another couple of hours and get to know their new friends a little better. Get Hep Swing has worked out a deal where Happy Hour menu selections will be a dollar off for all swing dancers. Make a night of it!
