The competition at the Tri-C High School Rock Off gets stiffer each year. When the event started almost two decades ago (it’s now in its 19th year), it was just starting to get cool for high school kids to be in bands again.
Now the event gets far more submissions than it could possibly showcase and the level of musicianship and showmanship is stunningly high. And while most high school bands don’t last as their members mostly go on to different colleges, a few have, including prominent local quartet The Modern Electric, who won in 2008.
See who’s promising this year when the event kicks with a series of six weekend semi-finals, each showcasing 12 bands, taking place at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Each evening, three winners will be picked by a panel of music business judges, and those bands will go on to compete at the “Final Exam,” also at the Rock Hall, on Sat 2/7.
