You’d expect the patio of a bookstore to host acoustic singer-songwriter plying earnest songs about their romantic setbacks.
There is some of that in Tremont’s Visible Voice summer weekend Garden Courtyard Music Series. But it also includes more cutting edge bookings.
During the Friday artwalk this month, for instance, it’ll have Brian Straw (pictured) and friends. Straw, who runs Survival Kit recording studio at the 78th Street Studios, does perform in a somewhat folkie style. But it’s the raw, deconstructed, experimental “folk” of indie artists like Andrew Bird, Devendra Banhart, and Calexico, all of whom he’s done shows with.
The following night, things get even more unhinged with the all-instrumental classical/world/jazz ensemble the Trepanning Trio.
Not a trio, the 15-year-old group has featured different configurations of up to a dozen of the area’s best musicians, playing traditional and classical instruments, some homemade. This performance will include seven musicians, each playing an assortment of instruments. The music’s hard to describe; the band’s own stab at it is “alt-classical, postminimal, avant-garde with the hummability of folk music.”
The music is always free. So you can spend that money on one of the glasses of wine they sell.
