Chamberfest Cleveland, the event started by Cleveland Orchestra principal clarinetist Franklin Cohen and his violinist daughter Diana (she’s with the Calgary Philharmonic) to take chamber music to a variety of venues within the community, enters its third year with an impressive array of shows, spread out over 11 days.
It kicks off at a venue where chamber music is often hear — the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Mixon Hall, where ten musicians, including the Cohens, will play music by a couple of composers you might know — Rachmaninoff and Faure — and a couple you probably don’t — early 20th century Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů and young American composer Kevin Puts.
From then until Sun 6/29, a repertory group of 20 performers will appear in different configurations from four to 13 musicians, at venues that include MOCA, Dunham Tavern, the Wine Spot on Lee Road, Case Western Reserve’s Harkness Chapel, Fairmount Presbyterian Church, and back at CIM again. The music ranges from familiar and traditional — Bach, Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart — to cutting-edge and experimental. It even includes a collaboration with GroundWorks Dance Theater.
Most performances include a pre-show talk; some feature an after-show chat with the performers as well.
