Local hip-hop acts tend to come and go, one homemade recording after another sinking into oblivion as young hopefuls move on. But local duo Smoke Screen (Mooke and Chemist) has been hanging in for a while, and rapper/producer Ghost Noises is no newcomer either. And last year, the trio got together and released an album as Smoke Noises on the local Alloy-X label. It’s full of evocative tracks that weave deft vocals with moody, even spooky, electronics.
Freeze-Tag (Marcus Alan Ward) is another area artist grounded in hip-hop, whose electronic dance tracks, like “No Passing (Otto & the Atom)” have been attracted international attention. He refers to his futuristic soundscapes as “prisma-chromatic.”
Smoke Noises and Freeze-Tag will perform together at the Grog Shop. Alloy-X co-founder Connor Walsh Musarra, who performs as electronic musician Urbindex (and produced one of Smoke Noises’ best tracks “Snakes on a Plane”), and busy local DJ Corey Grand are also on the bill. It’s a chance to check out some of the best area purveyors of hip-hop based electronic music.
Admission is $8.
