Southern Culture on the Skids has been making good on their name for three decades, pumping out their gleefully raucous, deliberately low-rent take on what they aptly describe as their “unique hybrid of Americana, surf, R&B, rockabilly, and swamp pop.”
The North Carolina trio released their first album Voodoo Beach Party in 1985, when they were roughly grouped with alternative party bands like the B-52s. They blasted through the ’90s performing at alongside post-Nirvana noisy pop/rock bands, and then hitched a ride on the Americana wagon that really got rolling by the end of that decade. With so many elements to their music, they’ve been able to surf through a bunch of scenes, even connecting to the horror/punk thing with 1998’s Zombified.
Late last year, they released Dig This, featuring re-recorded and updated versions of songs from their 1994 album Ditch Diggin’. The album includes a free download of instrumental track and lyrics so you can do your own karaoke SCOTS of tunes like “Too Much Pork for Just One Fork,” “Chicken Shit Farmer,” “My House Has Wheels,” and “Put Your Teeth Up on the Windowsill.”
The hard-touring band — guitarist/vocalist Rick Miller, bassist/vocalist Mary Huff, and drummer Dave Hartman is primed to hit the road again. They’ll be at the Beachland Ballroom with Cleveland’s own punkbilly rockers the Whiskey Daredevils.
