Native Clevelander Alan Leatherwood has been playing music longer than you’ve been alive — most of you anyway.
He released his first record in 1963, and in 50 years he’s been through a lot of musical formats and genres. He’s played pop, he’s played folk, he’s played roots rock, and on his latest release Tex Mex Breakaway, he adds some of that distinctive borderland sound to good old rock ’n’ roll. That album, which came out in December on his Cleveland-based Ohio Moon Records, features 20 tracks. Among them are ten originals and ten versions of tunes by the likes of Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly and Buck Owens, which should give you an idea of where he’s coming from.
Leatherwood heads a lineup at the Beachland Tavern dubbed Rockabilly Anniversary —since it’s the Beachland’s 14th anniversary weekend. It also includes veteran Cleveland rockabilly trio Rocket 88s and David Loy & the Ramrods.
