Detroit Soul Legend Gino Washington @BeachlandCle

Sat 11/23 @ 9PM

Gino Washington is yet another of those “lost” legends of soul music, artists who released a record or two, maybe had a couple of local or minor hits, and then vanished.

Washington, who, like many of these, came from Detroit, has a couple of local hits in the early ’60s with “Out of This World” and “Gino Is a Coward.” He released another batch of singles in the late ’60s, but nothing clicked, despite his sweet, clear, unaffected voice that could have crossed over easily into mainstream pop with the right production.

That was pretty much it for his music career, although he did have a local TV show in Detroit during the ’70s and still released an occasional single. Any extant copies are probably worth hundreds. They weren’t anything near hits.

But with the revived popularity of old-school soul music, performed by so many young bands, the old timers are crawling out of obscurity to reclaim their place in the spotlight.

Washington will be at the Beachland Tavern. Opening act is Wesley Brite & the Hi-Lites, one of the new breed of old-school soul acts whose popularity is exploding. They’ll deliver him a primed audience.

Secret Soul Club DJs Alright and Party Sweat will keep things moving before, after and during the break.

Admission is $15.
