You just can’t get rid of the Grateful Dead.
Sure, bandleader Jerry Garcia died in 1995. But between the hard-touring jam band’s influence on a horde of younger bands and the remnants of the group embarking on new projects, the music scene sometimes seems haunted by the San Francisco group’s ghost.
Drummer Mickey Hart, for instance, drops a new album, Superorganism, this week, which, he says, “[combines] music with science and the human body.”
“This time we journey into the micro, the hidden worlds of rhythm within us, within our bodies,” says Hart in his press release for the album. “My brain wave signals are reimagined in sound using a cap with electrodes that can read the throbs and signals of the brain. I have also sonified the sounds of stem cells, and heart rhythms for this recording.”
It’s an outgrowth of collaborative work he’s been doing, exploring the impact of music in ameliorating the aging process. Considering that he’ll be 70 next month and he’s still out on the road, there must be something to it.
He’s bringing his Organism tour to the Kent Stage where he promises to do a piece wearing an EEG cap so the audience can see his brain activity as he performs.
San Francisco quintet Tea Leaf Trio will open and then perform as the Mickey Hart Band.
