Sip Your Pink Martini at The State Theatre Courtesy Grog Shop

Thu 5/10 @ 8PM State Theatre

When Pink Martini co-leader China Forbes discovered an injury to her vocal cords, she tried bed rest. When that didn’t help, surgery was the only option. She’s now recovering, but can’t sing, so Forbes’s partner Thomas Lauderdale was in a pickle to replace the unique and charismatic singer for dates already booked in Europe last Fall.

Lauderdale couldn’t have found a better replacement than Storm Large, who has sung with the most crazily eclectic group of musicians one might imagine: John Doe, Rufus Wainwright, and  George Clinton, as well as fronting her own bands Storm and Her Dirty Mouth, and Storm and The Balls with Davey Loprinzi, formerly of Sweaty Nipples. She was eliminated just before the finale as a contestant in the reality show Rock Star: Supernova. Her single “Ladylike,” with Dave Navarro, debuted at #5 on Billboard’s Hot Singles chart. Her memoir, “Crazy Enough” and soundtrack CD, were released in January 2012, and are based on her cabaret show and tell the story of Large growing up with a mother who had psychological issues, as well as her early career as a competitive rower.

Pink Martini, who hail from Portland like Large, are known to mash-up lounge, jazz, classical and big band pop into a frothy and refreshing intoxicant. Known for their groundbreaking “Hang On Little Tomato,” and “Hey Eugene!” Pink Martini last year released two albums: “A Retrospective,” and “1969,” featuring Japanese vocalist Saori Yuki, which instantly shot to #2 in Japan.

Let’s hope the PHS Red Coats allow swinging and swaying in the aisles, unlike their last appearance. One can’t help but feel carried away with their orchestrated arrangements and world beat tempos with an understated political bent.

Get yr tix now. The Pinkies are a Cleveland fave, and tickets are sure to go fast!
