Educator/historian Dr. Eric Foner won a Pulitzer Prize for his 2011 book about Abraham Lincoln and this year, he’s the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award from the Cleveland-based Anisfeld-Wolf Book Awards, which honor authors whose work deals with social justice.
During this year’s Book Week (September 29-October 4), held to celebrate the annual awards, Foner will speak at a virtual forum hosted by the City Club of Cleveland. His topic: “Who is Permitted to Vote?: Lessons from the Reconstruction.” It’s a subject on which he’s considered a leading authority.
According to his bio, Foner “has used his career as a scholar to construct a more truthful narrative of the Civil War and Reconstruction, changing the language of this historical period from a story of white supremacy to a narrative that focuses on Black history, interracial democracy and justice.” He’ll talk about the topic of his latest book, The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution, and connect it took the today’s battles for freedom, justice and equality.
