Remember

Think of all the things you love about Cleveland, Akron & our region this time of year. I guarantee it’s the people.

People like our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico, still suffering three months after the horrific hurricane Maria nearly wiped out the entire island. Good people like Cleveland artists Eileen Sheehan, Linda Zolten Wood, Hector Vega and Richard Romero are raising money through artist donations, and you can help. You’ll recall Cleveland guitar wizard Neil Zaza went solo 25 years ago to tour the world and become a YouTube sensation; he’s back with One Silent Night and CoolCleveland’s got the interview.

Photog and CoolCleveland editor Anastasia Pantsios has been shooting stars for decades, her photos have been exhibited at the Rock Hall, and she successfully mounted a major exhibition a few weeks ago at Loftworks. Now her book, Girls to the Front: 40 Years of Women in Rock is available, just in time for the holidays.

And don’t forget to ShopLOCAL for your holiday gifts, and we’re gonna make it easy for you: CoolCleveland t-shirts are now available for 60% OFF, while supplies last (as they say). And it’s not too soon to score your Bowie tickets for our shows in January: his heroic Berlin Era on Fri 1/12 and his entire life from birth to Blackstar on Sat 1/13. You won’t forget now, will you? –Thomas Mulready

A lot has happened since Hurricane Maria virtually wiped out the island of Puerto Rico, and the conditions there have slipped off front pages. Only 60% of the island has power nearly three months later, and news reports suggest the death toll is ten times the official count.

In response, Cleveland artists Eileen Sheehan, Linda Zolten Wood, Hector Vega and Richard Romero are bringing other Clevelanders together at the Shore Cultural Center for CLE ART for Puerto Rico to raise money through artist donations.Come celebrate Puerto Rican culture and the talents of creative Clevelanders. Sat 12/16.

CoolCleveland editor Anastasia Pantsios, who has been shooting rock concerts since the ’70s, had a show of her images of women artists at the Rock Hall in 2011; it was on view again for three months earlier this year.

Now, just in time for the holidays, she has released a book based on that show, titled Girls to the Front: 40 Years of Women in Rock, available at local indie shops. John Benson talks to Anastasia about how she made this project a reality and why spotlighting women is important at this point in history.

Twenty-five years ago guitarist Neil Zaza walked away from the band that bore his name and walked into a career as a solo guitarist that has grown and grown, and made him a superstar in China, where he tours several times a year. And in early 2018 he’ll be touring Europe – again.

Meanwhile he’ll be doing his annual “One Silent Night” show at the Rocksino where he enlists musician friends to play his aggressive, not-very-silent versions of holiday classics. John Benson catches up with Neil on his way to the airport as he headed to Guangchou, China for a one-off show to find out what he’s planning for this year’s Christmas concert. Sat 12/16.

David Bowie’s Berlin Era has fascinated critics and fans for decades: riding high on the success of Young Americans, the artist hooks up with fellow addict Iggy Pop and relocates to Berlin to clean up (improbably, it works) and create some of the most acclaimed music of his storied career, the albums Low, “Heroes” and Lodger. CoolCleveland’s cultural impresario Thomas Mulready returns on Fri 1/12 with a in-depth and entertaining peek behind the scenes, David Bowie: The Berlin Era, informed by recently released and rare box sets, video and needle drops. Tickets.

The following evening, Sat 1/13, the audience is treated to Bowie’s entire fascinating life, An Evening With(out) David Bowie, in two parts, at 7:30PM and 9:30PM- see both for a discount. Each evening is punctuated with a blistering live set or two by Cleveland’s glam heroes, Vanity Crash, showcasing their 2017 release, Phantasmagoria, featuring pianist Mike Garson, Bowie’s longtime accompanist, alongside Bowie favorites and period classics. This show sells out, so secure your seat now. Tix.

Each year at the holidays, The Musical Theatre Project presents its “Christmas Cabaret,” giving its year-round mission of sharing timeless classics from the musical theater and the Great American Songbook a seasonal spin.

TMTP’s associate artistic director (and one of the performers), Nancy Maier, shares some of what they have in store this year for audiences at the four shows they’ll perform at Elyria’s Stocker Arts Center and Nighttown in Cleveland Heights. Fri 12/15-Mon 12/18.

Something about the holiday season brings out our inner movie star. We yearn to look chic and sparkly for all those holiday parties, concerts and visits with family and friends. And since we’re wearing more clothes at this time of year, why not make them eye-popping?

Our fashion maven Dru Thompson shares the hot trends this holiday season and how to wear them successfully. FYI she’s moved her shop from Waterloo down to the Lake Affect Building in the Superior Arts District because her business is booming and she outgrew her space. Stop in and say hi or sign up for a sewing class!

It’s tempting to slack off on your job search in December and just enjoy the holiday parties while making New Year’s resolutions. You know that companies are focusing on year-end goals and delaying hiring decisions. Maybe key personnel are even using up vacation days!

But, our business columnist Alex Sukhoy explains, there’s a lot you can do in December to put yourself ahead of the game and prepare to stand out from the parade of applicants in January. She offers a checklist of 10 things jobseekers can do right now with a cup of eggnog and a plate of holiday cookies at their elbow.

Where else can you see over 150 Christmas trees, all decorated for the holiday by area garden clubs, let alone a 20 foot Christmas tree decorated with the theme of peace. Or 170 individually created gingerbread houses decorated by kids, families and professionals, tucked in every nook and cranny.
