Vocalist Vanessa Rubin Sings Music by Jazz Greats at Nighttown and Akron’s Blu Jazz +

Fri 12/22 @ 8:30PM

Sat 12/23 @ 8PM

Cleveland jazz/pop/blues vocalist Vanessa Rubin headed to Columbus to attend The Ohio State University, and then moved to New York to pursue her career. And she’s done well performing with jazz legends like Toots Thielemans, Grover Washington, Jr., Herbie Hancock, the Woody Herman Orchestra, and the Jazz Crusaders.

She’s also become known for her skillful interpretations of Billie Holiday tunes, which she’s performed both as part of a one-woman show channeling Holiday in her own voice, and in her concert and nightclub sets. But she can navigate a lot of musical ground in her shows, drawing all her experience together to deliver performances with both depth and breadth.

Her latest project features the music of legendary jazz composer/arranger Tadd Dameron, who was also born in Cleveland.

Rubin says, “For many years I have touted the music of Tadd Dameron, also a fellow Clevelander, and have been developing an all-vocal recording project of some of his well-known and obscure vocal tunes. There have been many instrumental recordings of Tadd’s music over the years, but what makes this project unique is that it will be the first all vocal recording of Tadd’s music.”

She’ll undoubtedly perform a range of her most-loved music when she makes holiday appearances at two of northeast Ohio’s top jazz clubs: at Nighttown in Cleveland Heights on Friday and at Blu Jazz + in Akron on Saturday. She’ll erform with a trio featuring New Yorker Larry Willis on piano, with Peter Dominguez on bass and Reggie Jackson on drums. Tickets each night are $20.
