Lake County

Lake County, Cleveland’s neighbor to the east, has a little bit of everything. Looking to stroll in a quaint town? Head to Fairport Harbor. If you want to do some shopping and dining, go to downtown Willoughby, home of the beloved Willoughby Brewing Company and a street of mom-and-pop shops, coffeehouses, restaurants and galleries.

Historic Kirtland features restored 19th-century buildings that host multiple annual events including a spectacular holiday nativity display. It’s only one of many historical museums and institutions in the county. Nearby Holden Arboretum gives visitors ample opportunity to learn about and enjoy nature. The Lake Metroparks provides still more outdoor recreational activities including golf.

The bedroom community of Mentor-on-the-Lake offers the chance to enjoy one of the region’s greatest treasures, Lake Erie, at Mentor Headlands State Park, which boasts one of the biggest and most beautiful beaches in the region. The area is a mecca for swimmers. sunbathers, boaters, wind surfers, jet skiers, kite flyers and beach volleyball players.

County seat Painesville retains some of its New England-inspired charm with the historic buildings arrayed around its town square. That’s also the site of one of the region’s biggest music festivals, the free, three-day Painesville Party in the Park every July.
