Artists Archives of the Western Reserve Shows Work by Three Newly Archived Artists

Thu 5/16 @ 5:30-8PM

The archiving of the work of northeast Ohio artists at Artists Archives of the Western Reserve keeps expanding, with new artists constantly added to the collection. With each new archived artist, AAWR newly expanded galleries host an exhibit to share the work of that artist.

This week it will be displaying a feast of such work, with three simultaneous shows by newly archived artists: Transference & Translation by Baila Litton; Flaunt by Arabella Proffer; and Floating Worlds by Jean Kondo Weigl.

Each of the three women integrates elements of surrealism into her work but in very different ways. Proffer brings her unique vision to lushly colored pop-influenced art, including her recent Superfine Tableau oil paintings as well as her realistic but unreal portraits that depict a fantasy mixture of crossed cultures and centuries.

Litton and Weigl both use their work to explore issues around immigration and cultural identity. Weigl is a third-generation Japanese American influenced by Japanese images of the so-called “floating world” (ukiyo) which showed scenes of entertainment, theater and leisure apart from everyday life. Litton’s show of paintings, drawings and collaged works focuses on a world of displaced people and the stories of people of different ages, ethnicities and genders, and how they see each other.

The shows open with a free, public reception @ 5:30-8pm, Thursday May 16 and remain on view through Saturday June 29.
