Poet Ali McClain Shares Her Work at Donald Black Photo Show at Shaker Community Gallery

Wed 8/8 @ 7PM

Shaker Heights photographer Donald Black Jr. has been taking a series of images of the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood which he calls “the gunshot side of Shaker,” one of the city’s poorest neighborhoods. But in A Day No One Will Remember at the Shaker Community Gallery, he doesn’t focus on violence, poverty and decade, but rather black children living their daily lives, lives similar to those of kids everywhere.

“These are the people that I want to live forever,” says Black. “These are the missing images in the worldwide database of photo history.”

In connection with the exhibit, the gallery is hosting several programs. Tonight poet, educator and youth advocate Ali McClain, who has been one of Black’s subjects in the past, will perform her poetry, followed by an artist talk by Black, moderated by Carmen Lane. Black and McClain are both founders of the artist collective Acerbic whose work has been on display at MOCA Cleveland, and collaborated on the recent exhibit Love Being Black at the Morgan Conservatory.

It’s free and open to all.
